Tennessee AgrAbility is planning a special event to honor veterans and farmers. The Tennessee Farmer Veteran Picnic will be held in conjunction with the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture’s Milan No-Till Field Day on Thursday, July 28, 2016. Organizers say the picnic is open to any veteran who has also been employed in agriculture, or active duty military interested in agriculture as a post military career.
“I wanted a way to say thank you for serving twice,” says Joetta Turbeville White, area specialist with UT-TSU Extension and event organizer. “These men and women have protected our country through military service, and now they’re providing food, clothing and shelter to Americans through agriculture. They deserve to be recognized.”
The Farmer Veteran picnic begins at noon. In addition to a lunch featuring homegrown Tennessee steaks, the picnic will include a patriotic presentation led by local 4-H students and information on programs and services available to farmers and veterans. The guest speaker will be Charley Jordan, a farmer veteran from Woodlawn, Tennessee.
To attend, farmer veterans, plus one guest, must pre-register. Call 731-855-7656 to make reservations. Transportation to the picnic site will be available at the field day Overview Tour Tent, located near the main field day registration area.
Tennessee AgrAbility is a collaboration of UT-TSU Extension and USDA. According to White, the vision of AgrAbility is to enhance the quality of life for agricultural producers with disabilities so they can increase their independence and productivity.
The Milan No-Till Field Day will also feature 40 research presentations, an extensive agricultural trade show and the West Tennessee Agricultural Museum. The field day begins at 6 a.m. More information is available at http://milan.tennessee.edu
