At the Tennessee Junior Livestock Beef Expo in Murfreesboro on July 12-13, the Tennessee Cattlemen’s Association (TCA) with help from industry partners, purchased the winning show steers at a premium price. In the upcoming days, the cattle will be harvested for beef and donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Nashville. This will equate to approximately 2,500 pounds of beef for the local community.

“The Second Harvest Initiative allows us to supply a nutrient-rich product to a segment of the population that often suffers from iron deficiency or other disorders caused by a lack of protein,” said Charles Hord, executive vice president of TCA. “All the while, we’re rewarding the youth who work hard preparing these steers to show.”

TCA coordinated the purchase the first place steer for $5,000 with sponsorship from Yearwood Equipment and Hardin County Stockyard. The second place steer was purchased for $4,000, sponsored by Farm Credit Mid-America. The third place steer was purchased for $3,000, sponsored by TriGreen Equipment and My Team Insurance. The fourth place steer was purchased for $3,000, sponsored by Mountain Farm Equipment and Athens Stockyards.

Gary Daniel, president of the TCA, watched the shows with joy both of the days. “TCA gladly supports this program because we recognize that participation in 4-H and FFA livestock projects develop future leaders in our industry,” said Daniel. “We will need these leaders as part of the cattle community of Tennessee for many years to come.”

TCA also funded approximately $6,500 in premium money for division and reserve winning steer & heifer breed champions and reserve placing. Also, TCA gave $3,000 in sponsorship of the showmanship category and Skill-a-thon competition.

In total, TCA distributed nearly $12,000 directly to the youth participating in the Expo and coordinating with sponsors to donate an additional $14,500 for a total of over $25,000 in awards.
